20 Unnecessary Hip-Hop Disses That Shouldn’t Happen

In hip-hop, unexpected feuds often arise. The ego, pride, boasting and greed of some artists can cause jealousy and envy. Other times, it comes down to a simple misunderstanding that can be corrected through conversation. However, this doesn’t always work. Recently, two popular rappers in the game butted heads over song lyrics.

Coy Leray and Latto have been in contact since April, after Latto performed at Coachella. During the performance, the Atlanta rapper introduced his hit single “Put It On Da Floor.” Latto mentioned Coi Leray in her verse, rapping, “Smokin’ on that gas, dumb like Coi Leray.” The “No More Party” rapper found out and shared his thoughts on X, formerly known as Twitter. The series of tweets ended with Koi posting, “If you don’t like me, support me or don’t mention my name.”

After Latto cleared the air at April’s Something In The Water festival and shouted “I love your body, Coi” on stage, their feud was reignited. Last month, Coy released her single “Isabel Marant,” in which she had a line for Latto. “Hop on the couch and pull the Latto out of the bag,” Coy raps. Rapper Big Energy got his revenge with a remix of Young Nudy’s “Peaches & Eggplants.”

Latto mentioned Coy LeRay’s father, Benzino, on the track. “He don’t eat pussy, it’s time for him to go/Give me that neck like Benzino/Give me that neck and ask, ‘Where’s it going?’” Latto raps. There have been no more problems between them since then, so perhaps this war of words is over.

Whether it’s for a moment or longer, conflict always seems to start out of nowhere and for no good reason. Another feud that started this year started with Melle Mel targeting Eminem. This incident was over before it even started. Melle Mel disagreed with Eminem being ranked fifth on the list of top rappers and stated that his popularity and success is only due to the fact that Eminem is white. He then wrote a diss track aimed at the Detroit MC, but quickly abandoned it after it was released.

Over the 50-year existence of hip-hop, there have been many more unnecessary disses. Here’s a look at 20 unnecessary disses in hip-hop, including Common taking aim at Drake, 5-foot-9 Royce going after Lupe Fiasco, Childish Gambino calling out Kendrick Lamar, and more.—Brandon Simmons
