Visiting a doctor will cost you more starting December 22: discover the new rates

The agreement on the evolution of medical consultation fees was signed last June as part of the 2024-2029 medical convention, and it is from December 22, 2024, that the first adjustments will take effect.

understanding the 2024-2029 medical convention

The medical convention is a set of texts defining the relationship between private practice doctors and health insurance, particularly concerning remuneration and regulatory obligations. It aims to thoroughly transform our local healthcare system to maintain its quality and accessibility. Ultimately, it seeks to improve doctors’ working conditions, encourage them to settle in urban areas, and ensure patients receive quality and consistent care.

new consultation rates: what changes are coming?

Starting December 22, visiting your doctor will require a slightly higher payment. The fees for some consultations for doctors in Sector 1 (standardized rates) or those adhering to the Controlled Pricing Option (Optam) will be increased.

  • A visit to a general practitioner will rise from $28 to $32. Health insurance will cover 70% of the consultation fee. The remaining balance will be covered by your health insurer.
  • Certain specialties such as pediatrics, gynecology, psychiatry, neurology, endocrinology, dermatology, physical medicine, and rehabilitation will experience phased increases (first phase on December 22, 2024, and second phase on July 1, 2025). For instance:
  • The fee for a gynecological consultation will increase from $36 to $43.
  • A psychiatric consultation fee rises from $56 to $62.

For children:

  • The fee for routine pediatric check-ups increases to $42 for ages 0-2 (currently $41).
  • $38 for ages 2-6 (currently $36).
  • $34 for children over six years old.

Since the health crisis, mental health among those aged 12-25 has deteriorated. To better address this growing need, child psychiatry consultation fees are also rising — reaching $72 compared to today’s $59.

impact on supplementary health insurance

These increases have consequential effects on supplementary health insurance rates. According to figures revealed by French Mutuality this Wednesday, supplementary insurance premiums are expected to rise by 5.3% in 2025 for individuals and by 7.3% for employees.

making urban medicine attractive

The main goal of these measures is to improve income levels of certain medical specialties whose earnings have been among the lowest and stagnant over recent years. They aim at making urban medicine more appealing for both generalists and specialists in order “to revitalize” practice establishments while making these practitioners an “essential local link within our healthcare system.”
