it happened today

The rebellion began on 7 June 1640, the day of Corpus Domini (which is why it went down in history as the “Corpus de Sang”). Catalan farmers and harvesters, frustrated by troops from Madrid – stationed in the region as they were engaged in the Franco-Spanish War – entered Barcelona and attacked government officials. About twenty people died, including the Viceroy, the Count of Santa Coloma. This was the beginning of the rebellion in Catalonia (or the “Rippers’ War”), which would have a more lasting impact on Rousseau’s occupation of France. Antoni Gaudí was walking along the Gran Via de les Cortés Catalanes in Barcelona on June 7, 1926, when he was struck by the number 30 tram. At first he was mistaken for a beggar. The very next day the priest of the Sagrada Familia recognized him at the Santa Creu Hospital. However, it was too late: the great architect died a few days later. The massive church, on the construction of which he had worked for the previous forty years, would remain unfinished. ,Luigi Gaetani,

saint of the day

St Robert of Newminster, Benedictine Abbot. He was born in the country of Gargrave, in Yorkshire, at the end of the 11th century. He studied at the University of Paris and then returned to England and was ordained a priest. He left the parish of Gargrave to devote himself to a more contemplative life. In 1138 he founded the new Newminster Abbey, of which he became its first abbot. According to tradition, he was endowed with the ability to prophesy and there are many miraculous legends associated with his tomb in Newminster Abbey.
