American tourist Beckett (John David Washington) is on vacation in Greece when he finds himself at the center of a manhunt after a devastating accident. Forced to flee for his life, he desperately tries to reach American embassies across the country to clear his name. As the authorities put pressure on him, tensions mount, the political situation becomes more volatile, and the vicious conspiracy in which he is caught becomes ever tighter.

“Becket” is directed by director Ferdinando Saito Filomerino in his second feature film after making the biographical drama Antonia.

The title “Born to Be Murdered” was originally intended for a traditional theatrical release before Netflix acquired the distribution rights and the title changed to “Beckett”.
It is the first Netflix original film shot in Greece and the first to be shot in the ancient ruins of Delphi.
When Beckett and Tynan leave the car from the US embassy, the parking gate shown is that of “Megaro Mousikis”, a concert hall just across the street.

The name of the politician featured in the film is Karras. During the protagonist’s confrontation with a US embassy agent, the agent suggests that the prime ministerial candidate has ties to the shipping industry. One of the oldest and best known shipping families in Greece is the Karras family.
In the police station scene, when Beckett is on the phone with April’s father, you can see the letters “ACAB” on the wall above the light switch as the camera cuts to the police officer looking at her. This is indicative of the police corruption shown in the film.

John David Washington – Biographical Notes
John David Washington (born July 28, 1984) is an American actor and former professional football player who spent four years as a running back for the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League. Washington transitioned into an acting career like his father, Denzel Washington, and mother, Pauletta. He was part of the main cast of the comedy TV series ballers (2015–2019) with Dwayne Johnson. His breakthrough came by playing Ron Stallworth in Spike Lee’s 2018 crime film BlackKkKlansmanfor which he received nominations for a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award. In 2020 he starred in the sci-fi action-thriller keeper by Christopher Nolan, for which he won a Saturn Award for Best Actor, and with Christian Bale and Margot Robbie in the 2022 comedy thriller amsterdam by David O’Russell.
Ferdinando Saito Filomarino – Biographical Notes
Ferdinando Cito Filomarino (director) was born in 1986 in Milan. After completing his film studies at the University of Bologna, Ferdinando began working in the film industry, first as an assistant director and then as an editor for documentaries and short films. In 2010 Ferdinando wrote and directed his first short film diarchyProduced by Luca Guadagnino and Marco Morabito, starting their first of many collaborations – with Luis Garrel, Ricardo Scamarcio and Alba Rohrwacher – about a mysterious tension and competition between two young men in a dilapidated villa.
The short film was awarded at the Locarno and Sundance Film Festivals, at the Nastri d’Argento d’Italia and nominated at the European Film Awards. Ferdinando directed the documentary Deceit after “Dierki”. Visconti’s conversation piece, In Search of Visconti’s Masterpiece – premiered at the Rome Film Festival.
Ferdinand’s first fictional feature film, Antonia – a portrait of the Italian poet Antonia Pozzi – is a dreamlike journey through the last ten years of the artist’s short life. Antonia premiered at the 50th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, where it won the Jury Prize. Interview with Director, Hero and Producer
What was the central premise and inspiration behind this film?
Ferdinando Saito Filomarino: The inspiration for Beckett came from the many hunting stories in film and literature, where all these great stakes are placed on the shoulders of a single character. While crafting this story, I thought it would be interesting to see what would happen if that archetypal hero was just a regular guy. Thus, the premise revolves around the question: How does a common man cope in such an extreme situation? How will he survive?
Luca Guadagnino: There was a time when Ferdinand wanted to bring another Manhunt story to the screen, but the rights were not available. And I remember saying to him, “You know this genre so well. Why don’t you write a manhunt story and get it done? Of course, Ferdinand accepted my invitation. And thus it began. Finally, during the development process, I introduced Ferdinando to Kevin Rice, and they began working on the script together.
What aspects of the traditional manhunt thriller did you want to promote, but also in reverse?
FCF: There are definitely elements of the genre that I’ve borrowed, such as political theater and espionage, from books and movies that I love – Three Days of the Condor, The Fugitive, The 39 Club (book) – but I’ve used these materials Has done in trying to do something more recognizable in Beckett. In the grand tradition of manhunt thrillers, there is always something fantastic and fantastic about what is happening, and something superhuman about the abilities and intelligence of the protagonist. I treasured those teachings and kept the sense of adventure that the genre brings, but what I was trying to do was make the audience feel closer to the protagonist – who is not a detective or a policeman – but a normal person who lives a deep life. Living a personal crisis, trying to make sense of things the way most of us can. This dramatic essence of the main character, and a built-in frame around him (itself inspired by various actual events), can give the story a feel of embodied reality.
LG: I think the greatness of Beckett is that he is the wrong lead for the film. He is not a natural hero. He is not someone who somehow becomes a force of nature. He’s an everyman in the wrong movie, but he has to survive. I think the audience has an opportunity to witness the fragility of a man and his grieving process. I think it’s great that you’re in an over-the-top thriller that gets you closer to the mechanics of a manhunt, but also allows you to see the actor’s behavior. On the contrary, it is as beautiful a study as it is a thriller.
Beckett is a very different character than we’ve seen you embody in your previous roles. What fascinates you about this character?
John David Washington: I was attracted to the story of a man fighting for his right to life. A man who has to strive to do the right thing and become a better version of himself because of the circumstances that come his way. I mentioned it. I always try to see what I am capable of and learn what challenges help me achieve that. It seemed at the beginning of the film that Beckett was at a crossroads in her life. He is not an ambitious person by any means. Whatever dreams he had, they were somehow lost. Or he let life go. But the funny thing is that you never know what a person can do when he is facing death. The human will to survive gives you superhuman strength in many ways. So, I found myself admiring what Beckett does for a living, but also realizing that he couldn’t live with himself if he didn’t do the right thing.
