Turkish authorities continue investigations into an attempt to smuggle around 55 kilograms of banned cocaine into the country by controversial means, after border police stopped a diplomatic car at the crossing linking the Turkish and Bulgarian territories and discovered the drug on its internal.

According to details reported by Turkish media, on Tuesday two people attempted to bring 54 kg and 912 grams of cocaine through a diplomatic vehicle that entered Turkish territory from the Kapi Kule border gate in Edirne province.

According to information, the diplomatic vehicle belongs to the embassy of a South American country, it left from the Bulgarian capital Sofia and cocaine was found inside it.

The customs teams had found this quantity of cocaine in a package inside that vehicle after a regular search, which led to the arrest of the two people traveling in that vehicle.

According to information from Al Arabiya.net, neither of the two individuals has Turkish citizenship, but Turkey will still continue its investigation into them.

The driver and the person who was with him will be transferred to court once the investigations launched by the border police are concluded. They are still in detention, according to the previous source.

The latest statistics from the Turkish Ministry of the Interior, published on the Bianet website, confirm that the number of people arrested or convicted for crimes related to drug trafficking and trafficking has increased from 36,000 to 128,000 in the last seven years.

Data from the Turkish Ministry of Justice also reveals that a third of the 341,497 prisoners are behind bars for their involvement in drug trafficking and smuggling.
