Former San Francisco 49ers and Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh ranks current team quarterback JJ McCarthy as the best quarterback of all time while linking him to potentially entering the NFL next year ’s Tom Brady comparison.
Brady spent four years at the University of Michigan, the last two of which he impressed as a starter — becoming one of the school’s legends — and later with the New England Patriots. Harbaugh, who has spent time with Brady, sees some of Brady’s qualities in current quarterback McCarthy, who will likely declare for the NFL draft after this season.
So far this season, McCarthy has attempted 132 of 169 passes for 1,799 yards and 18 touchdowns with just three interceptions as the Wolverines remain undefeated at 8-0.

He is now the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy, ahead of three quarterbacks in Caleb Williams, Derek Meyer and Michael Penix Jr. who are expected to win the Heisman Trophy. Drafted high in the first round in April.
“He’s on the best path in Michigan history in every aspect,” Harbaugh said of McCarthy.
“It’s a merger. When you think about who is the best quarterback ever (to play for Michigan), it’s a merger.

“(Tom) Brady’s leadership, (Chad) Henne’s throwing, Denard (Robinson)’s running, (Rich) Leach’s wins. But I would even take J.J. over the combined quarterbacks .I think the statistics are right for that one to come out.”
McCarthy won 11 national championships and was named the greatest player in school history, which is high praise for him. However, they haven’t had a championship ring since 1997 when Brady was the backup.
Despite McCarthy’s impressive season, it’s unclear whether he will declare for the 2024 NFL Draft.
As Harbaugh said, McCarthy is shaping up to be the greatest quarterback the school has ever seen and could further improve his stock by staying in school for his senior year.
This year’s NFL draft has already seen six quarterbacks declare for the draft, Williams, Meyer, Penix Jr., Bonix, Quinn Ewers, Riley Leonard and Spencer La. Teller could be a first-round pick.
If McCarthy stays in school, and if he continues to improve, he has a good chance of being the No. 1 pick in 2025.
