Al Jazeera’s video footage was shared three times by the Israel Defense Forces on X, formerly known as Twitter. In publications, the Israeli army described the moving air object as a “missile directed at Israel” that “misfired and exploded.” Israeli army spokesmen also described this munition as an incorrectly launched missile.

According to Evrensel, a detailed analysis by the New York Times’ visual research team revealed that this video, which Israeli officials used to defend themselves, had been misinterpreted by Israel and the United States. To track the object in the sky, The New York Times synchronized the Al Jazeera footage with five other videos filmed at the same time, including footage from Channel 12, an Israeli television channel, and from a security camera in Tel Aviv. The New York Times team also identified the locations where the videos were filmed, based on camera frames, and placed perspective lines from these locations on the map, outlining the area visible to the cameras and determining that the object was launched toward Gaza from near the Israeli town of Nahal Oz, where scenes intersected. According to a New York Times analysis, the rocket shown in the video was launched from Israel, not Gaza. The videos show that the bullet shown in the Al Jazeera footage was fired after a barrage of Palestinian rockets, which Israeli officials believe were responsible for the hospital explosion. The rocket appears to have exploded over the border between Israel and Gaza, at least two miles (3.2 kilometers) from the hospital. The analysis concludes that the missile in the video never came close to the hospital.
