In order to provide medical services and respond to emergencies, a medical team of six women and one paramedic are permanently stationed in the construction area to ensure the health of the Bioceánica Bridge workers.
Dr. Liz Penayo, head of occupational health at the PYBR Alliance, said ambulance and paramedic services will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Professionals explained that in case of emergency, if the patient cannot get proper care at the scene, he or she is referred to the nearest hospital or IPS in the area or if the problem cannot be solved there, the patient is referred to the area. Go to the medical center in Pedro Juan Caballero, Concepción or Asunción (subject to availability).
He also said that they are coordinating medical treatment efforts with Pakistan. “We have good contact with the Porto Moutinho team and they always help us and if the problem cannot be solved there, or if the patient’s condition is unstable, they are referred to other locations,” he added.
Regarding the general situation of the workers, he commented that since the temperature peaks were very high, the highest number of cases were due to dehydration, hypertension and sometimes acute gastroenteritis, which he considered normal given the climatic and environmental factors. The environment in which they operate.
It is worth mentioning that Dr. Penayo is a local doctor. “I was born here, I left here to study and then came back here again to pursue my career also in the Ministry of Health and now as head of occupational health at the consortium. This is my second work, from start to finish For four years I was on Biomarines and now I’ve been there from the beginning,” she concluded when asked about her career.
But women’s involvement is not limited to the health sector, there are other functions performed by another group of women, all from the region, gaining prominence in non-traditional work areas.
The construction of the Bioceánica Bridge involved about 500 people and has a total length of 1,294 meters, divided into three parts: two parts form the entrance and exit viaducts on both sides of the Paraguay River, and the other part corresponds to the cable-stayed bridge section, measuring 632 meters in length and with a central span of 350 m.
The works are carried out by the PYBRA consortium (Tecnoedil SA, Paulitec and Construtora Cidade) and supervised by the Prointec consortium under the management of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MOPC). On the Paraguayan side, Itaipú Binacional is the financing organization.
