“He’s been in a football movie before and is actually believable in this role.”
So it turns out Boston has a clear first-round pick on who should play Tom Brady in the upcoming television limited series Patriot Way, which is currently in the writing stages. He is my favorite hometown.
“Casting John Krasinski in ‘Brady’ made sense because he’d done a football movie before and was actually believable in the role,” notes Stoneham’s Tony B. , he was referring to 2008’s “Leatherhead,” directed by George Clooney. “Movies often cast actors who clearly don’t know how to play sports, and it shows on screen.”
The “Office” star and Newton native received a total of 26% of the votes registered by more than 350 Boston.com readers, easily defeating second-place finisher Henry Cavill, who received 16%. But in terms of reader response, other characters — Bill Belichick, Gisl Bundchen, Bob Kraft and Rob Gronkowski — had much tougher competition. One of them is even a tie!
See the final results below, along with comments from readers on why they chose these specific actors to relive the Patriots’ glory days. (Sadly, this seems to be a thing of the past, at least for now.)
John Krasinski as Tom Brady
The second place: Henry Cavill
Most commonly mentioned “other” options: Chris Evans and Alexander Skarsgård
Several people pointed out the need for a “real Bostonian” to play Brady, even though he is actually from California.
Mel Gibson or Woody Harrelson (tie) as Bill Belichick
Third place: Tom Hanks
Most commonly mentioned “other” options: Paul Giamatti
The two top actors received 81 votes each, although we think Gibson might be more realistic.
Margot Robbie as Gisele Bundchen
The second place: Gal Gadot
Most commonly mentioned “other” options: Blake Lively
Let’s face it, Robbie is good at it all and has “Barbie” vibes. But Gadot came up just short, with 118 votes to Robbie’s 122.
Dustin Hoffman as Robert Kraft
The second place: Henry Winkler
Most commonly mentioned “other” options: Danny DeVito
Hoffman could play anyone, but we’re admittedly more interested in the other two options.
Rob Gronkowski as Rob Gronkowski
The second place: Channing Tatum
Most commonly mentioned “other” options: Allen Ritchson and John Cena
Apparently, readers feel that no one can be as Gronk as Gronk himself, although Tatum comes close.
Here’s how readers voted:
