Lionel Messi beats Erling Haaland to win the 2023 Ballon d’Or despite the Norway and Manchester City striker winning the treble in his first season in English football
In the Ballon d’Or voting, the gap between Messi and Haaland was more than 100 points, and the Argentine star won the Ballon d’Or for a record eighth time.
Haaland won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in his first season as a Manchester City player, scoring 52 goals in the process. However, it wasn’t enough to beat Messi after the Argentinian star led his country to a long-awaited World Cup victory.
The full breakdown of the voting has now been released, and it’s closer than 2022 with Karim Benzema leading the way. However, after his success in Qatar, Messi won with an even greater margin than his seventh Ballon d’Or in 2021.
“France Football” shared all the votes, and Messi topped the list with 462 points. Haaland is second with 357 points, while Messi’s former PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe rounds out the podium with 270 points.
A country-by-country breakdown has also been released, with each country’s singles being voted on in the program to choose Messi, Haaland or Mbappe as first choice. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all list Messi as their number one goalkeeper.
Aitana Bonmati became a winner when she won the Women’s Ballon d’Or. The Spanish star scored 266 points, with Australian forward Sam Kerr in second place with 87 points.

A total of 92 journalists from FIFA’s top 100 countries voted for the men’s award, while 47 journalists voted for the women’s award. Each reporter selects the top five and the scores are included in the final tally.

“Sharing what we have achieved with the national team with my teammates. I would like to thank the whole team, the coaching staff and everyone involved. Hats off to Kylian, Erling and Kevin (4th Kevin De Bruyne) – You are still young and have already achieved a lot.”
