After news of Friends star Matthew Perry’s death was announced last night, Los Angeles authorities continue to investigate to determine the cause of the beloved 54-year-old actor’s death.
Matthew Perry apparently drowned in a hot tub and police found multiple prescription drugs in his home, TMZ reports.
“Authorities found antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications and COPD medication inside the home,” the outlet reported.
COPD, short for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, is a disease that causes airflow obstruction and related breathing problems, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
This disease is usually caused by smoking and can cause emphysema or chronic bronchitis. Perry has previously admitted to being a lifelong smoker.
The Los Angeles County coroner is expected to conduct toxicology tests to determine what drugs, if any, were present in Perry’s system at the time of his death.
However, the results may not be known for several months.
TMZ also revealed that the actor played pickle ball for two hours at the Rivera County Club near his Pacific Palisades home on the day he died.
When he got home, he asked his assistant to buy him a new iPhone and some prescription glasses. Two hours later, an assistant found the star unconscious in the hot tub and called 911.
In a 16-second audio clip of the 911 emergency response obtained by the outlet, a man said “rescue 23” and “drowning.” Most of the audio has been removed.
Perry has publicly stated that he has a fear of death due to his years of battling drug addiction.
«I’m not sober because I want to be sober. “I stayed awake because I was afraid I was going to die the next day,” he told The New York Times in 2002.
In 2022, Perry revealed that he had spent nearly $10 million over the years trying to stay sober.
