Conjunctivitis cases double in Yucatan Peninsula – Ahora, Yucatan

The Federal Ministry of Health has revealed that since last week, there has been a confirmed case of conjunctivitis in the Yucatan Peninsula every 11 minutes, with the number of conjunctivitis doubling and even exceeding the total registered in 2022.

The epidemic has so far remained unchecked as it is highly contagious but not fatal, with Yucatan state recording more than 10,000 cases, the highest number in four years.
States in the region are among the 12 with the lowest incidence rates, and the problem tends to be exacerbated due to climate conditions.
Epidemiological outbreaks are also the result of people abandoning basic hygiene and disease prevention measures.
Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, a protective tissue with cells that allow its glands to cover the eyeball. When it goes away on its own, conjunctivitis may be allergic. When antibiotic medications are needed, conjunctivitis may be Bacterial.
So far this year, 476,992 confirmed cases of this annoying disease have been registered across the country, an increase of 68.91% compared to the 282,404 infected people in the same period in 2022.
The highest incidence rate is in Mexico City with 46,427 infections, accounting for 9.73%, followed by the state of Mexico with 42,731 infections, accounting for 8.96%, and Veracruz with 30,166 positive cases, accounting for 6.32%.
In addition, Colima state has 3,322 confirmed cases, accounting for 0.7%; followed by Campeche state with 4,389 confirmed cases, accounting for 0.92%; Baja California Sur has 5,141 confirmed cases, accounting for 1.08%.
Yucatán ranked 12th, with 10,540 infected people, a year-on-year increase of 123.83%. In the same period last year, there were 4,709 infected people, with an incidence rate of 2.21%.
In fact, the number of infections has surpassed 2022 by 9.25%, or 9,648 people infected, making it the most infected year so far in 2020.
The first outbreak of conjunctivitis occurred in 2015 and lasted four years, with the problem brought under control through measures to break the chain of Covid-19 transmission.
However, a second outbreak emerged in the first weeks of the year and continued to grow as people stopped practicing basic hygiene measures.
