Considered one of the most important writers in world literature. Two of his most famous works, War and Peace and Anna Karenina, are considered the pinnacle of Russian realism, along with the works of Fyodor Dostoevsky. He was orphaned at an early age by the death of his mother after two years of being pregnant with him and the death of his father in 1837.
In 1843 he entered the Faculty of Arts of Kazan University, a profession he later abandoned to study law. These changes resulted in little improvement in their poor academic performance. Moreover, according to Tolstoy himself in “Adolescence”, at the age of sixteen he lacked all moral and religious beliefs and indulged in idleness without any regrets. For a time he traveled to France, Germany and Switzerland, from where he brought back revolutionary educational ideas that led him to open a school for the poor and found a newspaper on the subject of education, which he published Named “Yasnaia Poliana”.
Although he was a man accustomed to thinking about death, the tragic death of his brother Nicholas gave him an extraordinary shock, and the following year he settled permanently in Yasnaya Polyana. In 1862 he moved there his wife Sofía Behrs, the daughter of a Moscow doctor, with whom he spent his entire life. Thanks to Sophia’s careful care of him during the early years of their marriage, Tolstoy took advantage of the best conditions to write his famous War and Peace, the epic epic of Napoleon’s 1812 invasion of Russia. In 1875 he published “Anna Karenina,” which told the story of an adulterer’s romance, but 1890 also saw “Kreutzer’s Sonata,” a strange denunciation of marriage, and There is “The Death of Ivan Ilyich” in 1885.
At the age of 82, he left home due to illness in the middle of winter and died of pneumonia at the Astapovo train station (now known as Leo Tolstoy). He died after escaping an aristocratic lifestyle and separating from his wife. Tolstoy tried to give away his fortune to help the poor, but his family prevented him from doing so.
