Damian Lillard’s blockbuster trade to the Milwaukee Bucks didn’t happen overnight. While this move may ultimately surprise many, the truth is that Lillard himself has long desired to play with Giannis Antetokounmpo.
In a recent interview, Demme recounted his first meaningful conversation with the Bucks talisman and how Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James played a key role in it.

During the 2021 All-Star Game, players were placed in “bubbles” to prevent the spread of COVID-19. By the way, Lillard and Giannis were on the same team that year, thanks to LeBron James drafting the two superstars to his team.
Giannis Antetokounmpo is Team LeBron’s No. 1 pick in the 2021 All-Star Game draft, while Lillard is one of James’ backup picks. Throughout the weekend’s festivities, Dame and Giannis got to know each other better:
“It was kind of weird because you couldn’t leave the hotel. I remember that year there was me, Giannis and ‘Joker’ (Denver star Nikola Jokic) on the bus from the hotel to the arena,” Lillard said via Jim Ocharski of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said. “…I’m sitting here and I feel like ‘Joker’ is in the seat in front of me and Giannis is in the row next to me and we’re having a three-way conversation. This is really the most face-to-face conversation we’ve ever had. And then we Got to the arena, before we went out there and did everything, me, him and “Joker” had our conversation in the hallway before we continued. And then (Dallas’) Luka (Doncic) came out. So it was all It’s these foreigners and me, you know?”
However, Lillard also revealed that their conversations were more casual in nature. There was no talk of an eventual collaboration. More on Lillard and Antetokounmpo learning about the man behind the name:
“I don’t think it starts any type of conversation,” Damm said. “I think it gave me a better understanding of what he was saying and how he was thinking. He gave me a better understanding of the man, you know what I mean? I think he did the same. I was working with (Sanasi) at that time S) probably had more conversations than I had with Giannis. When he sees me and I see him, we always respect each other. That’s it. “I wouldn’t say it starts a conversation. “
While that may not have started the conversation yet, it certainly planted the first seeds for what would eventually become an incredible superstar tandem with the Bucks.
