FOXBORO — The Patriots are 2-8 on the season and head coach Bill Belichick has been criticized heavily. But Tom Brady doesn’t think his former head coach should take full responsibility for New England’s problems this season.
Brady supported his former head coach on Monday night’s show The Stephen A. Smith Show On YouTube, again calling Belichick the greatest coach of all time. One thing Brady doesn’t want to imagine is Belichick wearing headphones and a hoodie on the sideline with another team.
“I think he’s an unbelievable coach. I believe he’s the best coach in the history of the game,” Brady said of Belichick. “So, I mean, I don’t know, it’s hard for me to think about him not being in New England.”
Brady and Belichick spent an incredible decade together in New England, and from afar, Brady doesn’t think Belichick has changed all that much. While the head coach will bear much of the blame when the team struggles, Brady said the Patriots’ problems shouldn’t fall solely on Belichick.
“He prepares the team well. Ultimately, you have to have a lot of people around you to be successful. You have to have a lot of things in order for an organization to be successful,” Brady said. “I think what he’s doing now is probably not that different to what he was doing in 2007 when we were unbeaten. I’m sure he’s preparing the team in the same way.
“The results are different, but that’s what makes this sport so challenging,” Brady added. “There are a lot of reasons why a team wins or loses. The head coach plays a very small part on game day.”
Quarterback performance obviously has a lot to do with whether a team wins or loses, and that’s not something we need a seven-time Super Bowl champion like Brady to tell us. The Patriots’ Mac Jones has been extremely poor this season. He ranks second in the league with 10 interceptions and has been on the bench three times this season. The offense has performed poorly in moving the ball and defending. point.
“The quarterback plays a very important role on game day, not the whole thing, but because you touch the ball, you have a great opportunity to impact the game. So, if you have good quarterback play, that doesn’t mean Saying what — I “I’m just talking about football in general — you have an advantage,” Brady said
But as Brady pointed out, it does take a team effort to win in the NFL.
“If you play a really good defense, you’re going to get a big advantage. I mean, you need a good defensive coordinator. Ultimately, it’s a lot of things coming together, why things work and why they don’t. It works,” Brady said.
On Sunday, the Patriots will try to snap a three-game losing streak against the 3-8 New York Giants in New Jersey.
