serena williams and ruby bridge will be honored to be selected national women’s hall of fame.
The athlete and civil rights icon has been added to the list of women honored during Women’s History Month in March 2024, the association announced Thursday. Eight additional winners were announced in the spring announcement. Due to changes in the date and location of the ceremony, Williams and Bridges received induction status.
“The 2024 inductees have broken barriers, challenged the status quo and made an impact on history,” the Hall of Fame said.
Williams, a 23-time tennis Grand Slam champion and the longest-serving player in the world, retired from tennis last year. She recently made history by becoming the first athlete to receive the Fashion Icon Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America earlier this month.
Bridges, on the other hand, was just a 6-year-old first grader in 1960 when she became one of the pioneer black students to attend segregated schools in New Orleans. This historic moment was immortalized by the famous painter Norman Rockwell. His iconic painting is titled “The Problems We All Face.” In addition, Bridges established the Ruby Bridges Foundation 24 years ago to promote tolerance and drive change through education.
However, in a historic move, the National Women’s Hall of Fame has announced that for the first time, the induction ceremony will be broadcast nationally in prime time from New York City. Traditionally, the First 30 ceremonies were held at various venues around Seneca Falls, site of the first Women’s Rights Convention in upstate New York and home to the National Women’s Hall of Fame location.
