Many times, allergy symptoms can be symptoms of a sinus infection, but it can be difficult to tell for sure. Here’s more about Dr. Charles Tebbit, an ear, nose, and throat specialist who practices in our Belmont office. Some allergy and sinus sufferers experience runny noses. Other patients are “obstructors” because their noses are simply blocked. People with both types may experience sneezing, itchy nose and throat, and itchy, watery eyes. Sinus sufferers are known to experience pain and pressure behind the eyes, near or in the ears. Another clue is when symptoms appear. “When the weather changes and it gets colder, people can experience a lot of sinus problems because of ragweed, pollen, and the cold weather,” Dr. Tebbit says. He adds, “You have 8 sinuses in your face, 4 on each side. , so problems can arise anywhere.” Over-the-counter treatments include Tylenol or Ibuprofen to relieve pain. Often, a decongestant or antihistamine, such as Afrin or Mucinex, may help; however, if the problem persists, you may need a CT scan. If you have taken antibiotics four or more times in the past year, you are more likely to have chronic sinusitis. This is more likely if antibiotics are prescribed appropriately for bacterial sinusitis and not just a cold, and if you experience at least temporary improvement while taking antibiotics. If the infection doesn’t clear up, then you may need some in-office procedures, FESS (Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery) or Balloon Sinuplasty.
