Serena Williams makes controversial statement supporting Lewis Hamilton

Serena Williams has found herself embroiled in drama and controversy in Formula One following her recent comments about Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion was reacting to comments made by Mercedes boss Toto Wolff. Ahead of last weekend’s Las Vegas Grand Prix, Mercedes spoke candidly to the PA news agency as they assessed Lewis Hamilton’s chances of winning a record-breaking eighth title.

Wolff claimed he was motivated by “personal anger” in helping the British driver achieve the historic milestone, which he failed to achieve in 2021 under rather questionable circumstances. Hamilton won seven world championships on the track (tied with Michael Schumacher for the most).

“We live in a hamster wheel and time flies by so fast it feels like less than two years have passed. You can see how quickly the pecking order changes. However, we have to look forward, learn from the past, and Trying to get Lewis another quick win now. I’m personally angry and motivated to get him an eighth title because he deserves it.”

The jury is still out on whether the 38-year-old should have won more than seven titles in the past, but the general consensus among many fans is that he should win the 2021 world title after the final race in Abu Dhabi amid controversy.

Max Verstappen took the title from Hamilton on the final lap. Serena and Lewis Hamilton do have a genuine and friendly relationship.

The American tennis legend has previously called the Briton “the greatest driver our generation has ever seen” and has attended quite a few Formula 1 races to show his support.

Serena made headlines for her recent post, which she wrote beneath a cheeky reply that included comments from Toto Wolff saying Hamilton “should” have won nine titles in Formula One.

“He should have nine already. But…just leave me alone.”
