NFL legend defensive end JJ Watt took a page from quarterback great Tom Brady’s book after mingling with the locals ahead of Burnley’s game against West Ham United.

Watt, like Brady, is invested in a UK football team. Brady chose Birmingham City, while Watt, the three-time Defensive Player of the Year, chose Burnley, who were promoted back to the Premier League from the Championship last season.

After announcing the investment, Brady visited a local bar in Birmingham before the game, where he was mobbed by adoring fans. The 46-year-old seven-time Super Bowl champion was even welcomed by Birmingham fans. Many people took photos of the American football legend as he made his way through the crowd. He told the fans: “It’s great to see you” before entering the stadium with his entourage for the game against Leeds United, which Birmingham won 1-0.

Watt has now followed suit, but he took it a step further, getting drunk behind the bar and pulling away before Burnley’s game against West Ham at Turf Moor. The former NFL star’s visit to England even attracted fans from the United States to watch the game. Watt claimed on Twitter that he met 160 fans from Houston. “Flyed out of Houston last night, arrived at Burnley this morning and was immediately met by a group of 160 fans from Houston,” he said on X (formerly Twitter). “What are the chances…”

Unfortunately for Watt, Burnley failed to register their first home win of the season despite taking the lead with less than five minutes remaining. Jay Rodriguez opened the scoring for the Clarets early in the second half via a penalty kick. West Ham United academy star Dewan Mbama thought he had equalized in the 86th minute, but Dara O’Shea’s own goal was disallowed.

Tomas Soucek then took all three points in extra time on a specialist cross from Mohamed Kudus. The defeat leaves Burnley bottom of the Premier League after 13 games. In the 2023/24 season, the Clarets only scored points in two games; a victory over Luton and a draw with Nottingham Forest.

“That’s what makes this game so good but also why it’s difficult,” head coach Vincent Kompany said of the defeat. “There’s no other way to say it, it’s a tough day. I mentioned it before and it’s still a universal tip: you still have to get up and keep going.
