LONDON, Nov 27 (Reuters) – Britain reported on Monday its first human case of infection with a strain of influenza A (H1N2) similar to the virus currently circulating in pigs, with those affected suffering mild illness and fully recovering.

The UK Health and Safety Authority (UKHSA) said the case was discovered during routine national influenza surveillance and the source of the infection was unknown.

Health authorities are monitoring close contacts of the case, the statement said, adding that the situation was being brought under control through increased surveillance at clinics and hospitals in North Yorkshire, northern England.

UKHSA incident manager Meera Chand said: “This is the first time we have detected this virus in the UK, although it is very similar to the virus detected in pigs.”
