One of the hostages released by Hamas said that Sinwar came to them in the tunnel and spoke to the hostages. Another detail in the news is that Yahya Sinfar, who was reported to have gone down to the tunnel to inspect the hostage situation, spoke Hebrew fluently.
The Hamas leader told the hostages that they would not be harmed. Channel 12 in Israel reported that Israeli security units confirmed that Yahya Sinfar spoke with the hostages.
Israel believes that the person who planned the October 7 operation is Yahya Sinfar, and in the past seven weeks the Hamas leader has been searched everywhere. Thousands of Israeli soldiers, backed by drones, electronic eavesdropping devices and informants, tried to find Yahya Sinfar.
The biggest surprise was when Yahya Sinfar, widely known among Palestinians as Abu Ibrahim, met the hostages in the tunnels while Israel was searching him.
Sinfar, 61, who was first arrested when he was 19, was held in Israeli prisons from 1988 to 2011. He was among 1,100 prisoners released in exchange for Gilad Shalid, an Israeli soldier held hostage by Hamas.
