Cambodia Two new serious cases of human coronavirus infection recorded H5N1 Avian Influenza, bringing the country’s total number of cases this year to six. These latest cases, along with four previous ones, involve an older branch of H5N1 that has been circulating in the country’s poultry for at least a decade. Scientists are currently analyzing whether these last two patients were infected with an ancient clade or a newer clade that is prevalent worldwide.
The patients were neighbors of the area where the sick birds were found, including a 21-year-old woman from the province. kampot, in southwestern Cambodia, and a 4-year-old girl who lives next door to the first patient. The woman began to show symptoms on November 19 and was admitted to the hospital on November 23 and was treated in the intensive care unit (ICU). On November 23, the girl became ill after holding a dead chicken and was hospitalized two days later.

- The virus is endemic in birds and is excreted in large quantities in their feces. Although the risk to travelers is minimal, it is recommended to avoid direct contact with birds or their secretions. Cooked chicken does not spread the virus.
