Cristiano Ronaldo faces $1 billion class action lawsuit after promoting Binance NFT

NEW YORK (AP) — Portuguese soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo is hit with a class-action lawsuit for promoting cryptocurrency-related “non-fungible tokens” (NFTs) issued by a troubled cryptocurrency exchange. , seeking at least $1 billion in compensation from Binance.

The lawsuit, filed Monday in federal court in the Southern District of Florida, calls Ronaldo’s promotion of Binance “deceptive and unlawful.” The plaintiffs allege that Binance’s partnership with high-profile figures such as Ronaldo led them to make costly and unsafe investments.

“Evidence now shows that Binance’s fraud was only able to reach such a high level through the issuance and sale of unregistered securities with the voluntary help and assistance of some of the richest, most powerful and well-known organizations and celebrities in the world — — like defendant Ronaldo, the lawsuit reads.

Ronaldo’s representatives declined to comment Thursday. Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, did not immediately respond to a request for a statement from The Associated Press.
