Farms affected by the situation include those in Sonoma County, north of San Francisco, where a state of emergency has even been declared due to the highly contagious nature of the virus.
Over the past two months, more than a dozen commercial farms have been forced to cull at least a million poultry in an effort to control the outbreak, a measure that has in turn had severe, mainly economic, consequences for farmers, workers and customers.
Likewise, Merced County is similarly affected by avian diseases that occur primarily in egg-laying birds.
How does this virus spread?
Some experts are said to have pointed to migratory birds such as ducks and geese as spreaders of the virus affecting commercial poultry hens, which is why they must step up measures to prevent the spread of the disease.
The situation is reminiscent of that experienced by the same entity a year ago that affected producers and consumers and has now resulted in the sacrifice of nearly 82 million poultry in 47 U.S. states.
