Influenza epidemics continue to increase, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) epidemics have declined. Likewise, there has been an increase in hospital admissions due to COVID-19, according to data from the Catalan Infection Surveillance Information System (SIVIC).
The current peak influenza incidence is 153 cases per 100,000 residents, which is higher than this time last year but still lower than in previous years of the pandemic.
Catalonia’s health system is equipped with all medical equipment to cope with the increase in the spread of respiratory viruses. Health center activity is normal around these dates.
Epidemiological situation
In the week of December 25-31, 2023, the incidence rate of acute respiratory infections decreased slightly compared with the previous week, which may be due to the Christmas holiday and lower utilization of health services.
There were 720 COVID-19 patients admitted to regular beds, an increase of 176 from the previous week; 24 people were admitted to the ICU, an increase of 11 from the previous week.
Measures to prevent respiratory infections
- Wash your hands regularly and correctly.
- When you sneeze or cough, cover your nose and mouth with a disposable tissue and throw it in the trash.
- Ventilate enclosed spaces.
- If you have respiratory symptoms, wear a mask and avoid contact with vulnerable people while you are sick.
- If you feel unwell, limit contact or stay home; if you are elderly or have a chronic medical condition, or if you are not doing well, talk to a health professional.
- If your vaccinations are not up to date, make an appointment to get your flu and COVID vaccinations.

COVID-19 vaccination coverage for vulnerable people over 80 is 59%, and for those aged 70 to 79 it is 45%. Influenza coverage is higher in these age groups, at 65% and 53% respectively.
Regular and guaranteed increase in healthcare activities
Last week’s increase in activity occurred mainly at primary care acute care units (CUAP), which handle an average of more than 6,000 emergencies a day. In hospitals, emergency department activity increased by 1.3% (average daily visits: 11,176 visits), and the proportion of admissions increased and was slightly higher than seven days ago.
