Even though it’s been decades since his retirement, the greatest player of all time continues to set records.
Michael Jordan’s championship sneaker collection sold for a record $8 million at auction on Friday. Sotheby’s is offering six Air Jordans worn by the player in key games of his six NBA Finals championships, setting a new record for game-worn sneakers and becoming the second most valuable piece of Jordan memorabilia thing.
“Today’s record-breaking price demonstrates the value of the Goat,” Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s head of modern collections, said in a statement. “There is no denying that dynastic collections are among the most important in history. one of the largest collections of sports memorabilia in the world. It serves as both a reminder of Michael Jordan’s lasting impact on the world and a tangible expression of his recognized legend status, the significance of which is further confirmed by this landmark result. “A truly unparalleled moment in auction history And milestone, the auction of these six championship-winning sneakers may never be replicated. ”
The series covers Jordan’s first winning season with the Chicago Bulls in 1991, to his post-retirement victory over the Seattle SuperSonics in 1996, to his final season with the Bulls in 1998. The shoes were given by Jordan to Tim Hallman, Jordan’s public relations director. Bulls, each piece signed and inscribed by the legendary athlete. (The tradition also spawned some of the iconic images of Jordan celebrating each victory with just one sneaker on his feet.) Holman eventually gave the collection to its previous owner, who offered it to Sotheby’s Than auction house sale.
While $8 million is a pretty eye-popping amount for six pairs of unparalleled sneakers (though not just any sneakers), it’s not the highest price for Jordan memorabilia. In 2022, the shot-stopper’s 1998 NBA Finals Game 1 jersey from the “Last Dance” season sold at auction for $10.1 million. This makes it the most expensive piece of game-worn sports memorabilia ever sold, a record that still stands today. In April, Sotheby’s auctioned off another record-breaking piece of Jordan history: an Air Jordan 13 from Game 2 of the same series sold for $2.2 million, the most for any sneaker at the time. Most people would despair of having just one pair of shoes, but the owner of the Dynasty Collection must be very pleased with the result.
