A signature sneaker worn by Michael Jordan during the NBA Championship sold for a whopping $8 million at an auction in New York City.
Six pairs of sneakers worn by the basketball legend have broken the record for the most expensive game-worn sneakers ever sold, Sotheby’s announced Friday.
Jordan wore shoes made by Nike during his championship-winning games in 1991, ’92, ’93, ’96, ’97 and ’98, known as the “Dynasty Series.”
The beloved basketball player, who retired in 2003, was photographed by Bill Smith wearing just one shoe while celebrating a victory. The auction also includes a limited edition signed print by the photography enthusiast.
The auction house did not disclose the identity of the winning bidder of $8,032,800.
“Today’s record-breaking price is a testament to ‘the greatest player of all time,'” Sotheby’s CEO Brahm Wachter said in a statement. “It serves as both a reminder of Michael Jordan’s impact on His lasting impact on the world is a tangible reflection of his recognized legendary status, and the significance of this milestone is further validation of that.”
These six pairs of sneakers stand out as the auction house’s second-highest total of Jordan stolen items. The jersey worn by the Chicago Bulls icon during Game 1 of the 1998 “Last Dance” finals sold for $10.1 million in September 2022.
Seven months later, a pair of Air Jordan 13s worn in Game 2 of the 1998 NBA Finals sold for $2,238,000—the highest price ever paid for a pair of sneakers at the time.
Wachter, who oversees Sotheby’s Modern Collection, described the huge sale as “a truly unparalleled moment and milestone in the history of auctions.”
