Ryan Coogler-Michael B. Jordan project falls to Warner Bros. in bidding war

Warner Bros. has acquired the latest film from acting and directing duo Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler. Amid stiff competition, Warner Bros. Picture Group’s Michael De Luca and Pam Abdi confirmed the studio will launch the film.

Coogler will serve as director, producer and screenwriter, with Jordan set to star. The film is said to be based on Coogler’s original idea. Coogler will produce through his production company Proximity Media, alongside Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian, with Rebecca Cho serving as executive producer.

Nothing is known about the plot. In January, it was said that the film was intended to be a genre story.

The project reunites Coogler and Jordan, who have collaborated on multiple projects, starting with their first feature film together, the 2013 TV series Fruitvale Station. Since then, the two have gone on to produce the first “Tenet” film as well as two “Black Panther” films. This is also the second time Coogler and Jordan have teamed up with DeLuca and Abdi. The Warner Bros. duo greenlit Jordan’s Creed III while it was at MGM (now Amazon MGM Studios).

It is one of several projects in various stages of development in Jordan. He played Adonis Creed’s final scene in Creed III. Coogler is currently an executive producer on the Disney+/Marvel series Ironheart and a director and producer on the Disney+ show Eyes of Wakanda.

Deadline first reported the news.
