1931 – In the first major league night game, the Chicago White Sox played a 10-inning exhibition game against the New York Giants in Houston.
1952 – The Boston Celtics and Fort Wayne Pistons kicked off the show at midnight with the “Milkman Special” following the Ice Follies show at the Boston Garden. The Celtics’ Bob Cousy scored 24 points in an 88-67 win in front of 2,368 fans.
1952 – Dick Button completes the first triple jump in figure skating.
1953 – In the longest game in college basketball history, Niagara defeats Siena 88-81 in six overtimes.
1960 – Philadelphia Warriors rookie Wilt Chamberlain sets an NBA record by scoring 58 points in his fourth 50-point game of the season in a 129-122 victory over the New York Knicks.
1970 – Bobby Hull scores two goals, including his 500th career goal, in the Chicago Blackhawks’ 4-2 victory over the New York Rangers .
1970 – LSU’s Pete Maravich scores 64 points in a 121-105 loss to Kentucky. Dan Issel scored 51 points for the Wildcats.
1976 – New York’s Red Holzman becomes the second NBA coach to win 500 games after Red Auerbach with a 102-98 victory over New Orleans.
1992 – Kristy Yamaguchi wins the United States’ first Olympic gold medal in women’s figure skating since 1976. Midori Ito of Japan won the silver medal and Nancy Kerrigan of the United States won the bronze medal.
1996 – The Philadelphia 76ers lose 66-57 to the Miami Heat in the NBA’s worst offensive performance in 41 years. The 76ers matched Milwaukee’s record for fewest points in a 62-57 loss to Boston on February 27, 1955, in the first season of the 24-second clock.
2002 – In Salt Lake City, U.S. figure skater Sarah Hughes jumps from fourth to first to win Olympic gold, while teammate Michelle Kwan takes bronze. The strong U.S. women’s hockey team lost 2-3 in the gold medal game to a Canadian team that had defeated them eight times in a row.
2003 – Michael Jordan scored 43 points in the Washington Wizards’ 89-86 victory over the New Jersey Nets, becoming the first 40-year-old player in NBA history to score 40 or more points.
2014 – Mikaela Shiffrin becomes the youngest Olympic slalom gold medalist. The 18-year-old American finished 0.53 seconds faster than Austrian Marlies Schild.
2016 – 58th Daytona 500: Denny Hamlin wins the closest finish in race history – just 0.01 seconds ahead of Martin Truex Jr .).
2018 – Winter Olympics: Jessie Diggins and Kikkan Randall become the first Americans in history to win cross-country gold (team sprint).
