A property in Charles County, Maryland, is under quarantine after officials discovered a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza in a flock of birds in the backyard, the Maryland Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday.
The USDA National Veterinary Services Laboratory is working to confirm the results, which are expected in the coming days, According to the press release .
Maryland Department of Agriculture Secretary Kevin Atticus urges all poultry farmers, operators and owners to remain vigilant.
“Biosecurity remains the most effective way to prevent the spread of this disease in poultry, regardless of flock size,” Atticus said in a statement.
