Michael Jordan and Chris Chelios
Michael Jordan was set to make a public appearance when Chris Chelios’ jersey was retired, but that wasn’t to be. The former Bulls superstar was unable to attend the event due to a death in the family.
Since Jordan and Chelios are close, and Jordan didn’t want to disappoint his friend, he sent a video message to the Blackhawks icon.
What did Jordan say?
“Hey, man, unfortunately Chelios, I can’t make it this week,” Jordan said, according to NBC. “I tried to compete for Ring of Honor and couldn’t make it. Sunday at home Someone has passed away. You were a truly deserving person and I am honored to see your jersey next to mine. Because we have been friends for thirty years, I wish you the best. I send you my love. Go Blackhawks!”
Jordan and Chelios lived in the same city from 1990-98 and played at the United Center from 1994-98.
Jordan, known as “Black Jesus” by some fans, led the Bulls to six championships. Chelios, meanwhile, was a superstar for the Blackhawks and helped them reach the 1992 Stanley Cup Finals.
Chelios, 62, who wore No. 7 with the Blackhawks, won two Norris Trophies in Chicago while being a five-time All-Star.

What did Chelios say for Jordan in his speech?
He thanked Jordan in his speech. “Naturally, we turn to Michael Jordan, who I love so much. He’s the king, no question,” Chelios said in an interview with NBC Sports Chicago.
“They still say that cliché, ‘I want to be like Mike. Honestly, I want to be like Mike. Plus, I train well, which is something I’ve never done in my career. And all I do is watch ‘Every After every game, he and his coach, Tim Grove, work out with him. I think if Michael had a coach, I might have an advantage. I would hire a coach,” Chelios added.
Chelios went on to say that Jordan and he will soon be celebrating the honor.
“I met him a few weeks ago and we talked,” Chelios said.
“Mentally, he’s here. His jersey and mine are hanging in the rafters. We talked about that. He’s been supportive of me and we talked yesterday. He’s there for the Hall of Fame. We’ll be there next week. His anniversary celebration ship.”
