The Compton hip-hop producer spoke about it in an interview with Kevin Hart for his Heart to Heart podcast, leaving the host stunned. “He asked me to work with him and I said, ‘What can I do with him? He’s my fucking hero.’

Hart then reminded his guest that, after all, he is Dr. Dre and a 17-time 5-time Grammy Award nominee, not exactly a newcomer. And Dre explained that the last person he asked to work with was Stevie Wonder, adding that he liked “how I feel about Stevie, Prince, Michael, Bruce Springsteen and all these incredible artists” and He doesn’t want to do that. Working with them risks ruining it: “I love the idea that I heard growing up and I want to keep it. I don’t want to destroy it.”

“I love working with new artists”
But there is another reason why Dre said no to these great artists. In fact, he loves working with young people, spotting talent, helping them to emerge. He did this with artists such as Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar. “My whole life and career has been about working with new artists. That’s what I like to do. No one comes with a well defined agenda. When he enters the studio it is like a ball of clay in front of me. You can shape it and do whatever you want with it. And that’s what I want to do. Everyone else, especially my heroes, would come in and have a certain plan of how the piece should be, you know… I just couldn’t figure it out.”
