Jack Torrance is a writer in crisis in search of lost inspiration. In order to find her and make ends meet, he accepts an offer to hide out with his family for the winter at the giant and luxurious Overlook Hotel, secluded in the middle of the Rocky Mountains. The hotel is closing for the winter season and Jack’s job will be to look after it while it reopens. In the meantime, Jack thinks, he could be working on his new novel. With him is his devoted wife, Wendy, and their son, Danny, who are not at all thrilled by the prospect. In a conversation with someone who will entrust him with the job, Jack learns that a few years earlier, a terrible bloody event took place in this very hotel: the previous caretaker went crazy, maybe from loneliness, and exterminated his own family with an ax before committing suicide. Jack assures that nothing like this can happen to him. At the hotel, on closing day, Jack receives delivery and instructions. The location is fantastic and everything seems perfect. But Danny begins to see strange things, and the winter at the Overlook Hotel is going to be very long.
