Rafael Foglieri wants to buy Rome. A sensational indiscretion stirred up the morning of the Roma fans: about 850 million euros to wrest the Giallorossi club from the Friedkins, who by no means seem willing to be sold to the club. On his Instagram profile yesterday, Follieri posted a photo in which he intends to sign a letter with which he presents his offer to buy Roma: “We are ready,” he wrote in the description. But who is Folieri?

Who is Folieri?

Raffaello Foglieri is an Apulian entrepreneur in the energy business. Born in 1978 in San Giovanni Rotondo, province of Foggia, he built his empire first on oil and then on gas and rare metals needed for new technologies and the production of magnets, sensors and transducers. These raw materials are essential for the production of environmentally friendly technologies such as wind, solar and electricity, as well as for the aerospace and military industries. Over the years, he forged relations with Arabia, even with members of the royal family, quickly becoming the Saudis’ favored middleman in Italian energy affairs.

Interests in Arabia and football

His operational headquarters are actually in Riyadh, and for some time he has been aiming to enter the world of football through the front door, that is, to become the president of the club. In the past, he tried his hand at Foggia, Catania and Palermo before the Rosanero club was bought by the Manchester City group. At that time, the deal fell through because Zamparini requested additional guarantees of financial stability, which the entrepreneur could not satisfy, defending himself with an official note in which he stated that he had already provided all the necessary documents.

Litigation and Anne Hathaway

However, before success, thanks to his friendship with the Arabs, Follieri also had problems with the law. In 2008, he was sentenced in the United States to serve a sentence on 14 counts, including conspiracy and money laundering, and spent four and a half years in a Pennsylvania prison. All because of a $2 million scam: Follieri posed as a financial adviser to the Vatican and convinced several entrepreneurs close to former US President Bill Clinton to invest large sums in non-existent businesses. Therefore, he was forced to pay $3.6 million in compensation. During his American period, Follieri also intertwined an affair with famous actress Anne Hathaway that ended shortly before his conviction.
