Fast & Furious 11 director Louis Leterrier has been teasing Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson’s reunion as the Fast & Furious saga draws to a close. Leterrier directed Fast X, the first film in the latest story arc, which sees the return of Dom Toretto from Diesel and his family. The Fast X post-credits scene hints at the return of Johnson as Hobbs, who will return in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Reyes.
Speaking to Comicbook.com, Leterrier expressed his excitement that Diesel and Johnson would reunite as Dom and Hobbs in Fast and Furious 11. Leterrier explained how much he loves the idea of returning the characters and how exciting it will be to see them return. new together on the big screen. Here is what Leterrier said:
“I love the idea of them getting back together. What I realized – like you, I was a fan of reading – was that they kept talking to each other. They seemed to be texting with friends, wishing each other “Happy Birthday”, “Merry Christmas”. But being present in each other’s lives… It’s more a matter of having these two characters work in the same universe, especially after Hobbs and Shaw were so different in tone. It was such a great departure from the original franchise… We looked at each other and said, “Honestly, wouldn’t that be great? Not just for the franchise, but for the fans and for you to get back on the same train together?” And they had this conversation. I was lucky that I was able to work with Duane that day, and maybe later.”
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Reyes is intended to be a bridge between Fast X and Fast & Furious 11, explaining why Johnson will appear in the film. At the end of Fast X, Dom and his family find themselves in a dangerous situation, betrayed by Ames (Alan Ritchson), who crashes a plane with Roman, Tej, Ramsey and Khan. The film also ends with Dom’s brother Jacob (John Cena) sacrificing himself to save Dom and his son Little B.
When Johnson returns as Hobbs in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Reyes, he will be Reyes’ new target in her quest to avenge her father’s death in Fast & Furious 5. The film will no doubt be as action-packed as the other Fast and Furious films, but it will also serve as preparation for Hobbs’ role in Fast and Furious 11. While it’s unclear what happened to some of the characters at the end of Fast and Furious X, the idea of Dom and Hobbs teaming up in Fast and Furious 11 could hint that they’re trying to save everyone from Reyes’ wrath.
However, nothing concrete about Fast and Furious 11 is known at this time other than the reunion of Dom and Hobbs. He is confident that Reyes will still be the main threat as the saga of the swift draws to a close, and that Dom and his family will need to band together to stop him once and for all. How Dom, Hobbs, and the rest of Dom’s family will face Reyes in Fast & Furious 11 remains to be seen, but it will no doubt tie into the high-octane action that the Fast & Furious saga is known for.
