‘The Departed’: Nicholson terrorized DiCaprio on set

Throughout his career, Leonardo DiCaprio collaborated with Martin Scorsese in more than 6 films, this is their seventh collaboration, Flower Moon Killers will be released in theaters in October this year. But of all the classics they’ve teamed up for,, Departed it was the only film to win Oscar recognition, earning Scorsese his first Academy Award for Best Director. And one of the main reasons for the huge success of the film was the performance of Jack Nicholson as a mafia boss. Frank Costellowhose character improvisation horrified even DiCaprio.

IN Departed actually an actor Titanic he played an undercover cop in an Irish gang, while the same gang appoints their mole Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) to the police. In one of the most memorable scenes in the entire film, Jack Nicholson’s Costello interrogates DiCaprio’s Billy Costigan. But given that the star shining Martin Scorsese gave him the freedom to improvise, which led to DiCaprio becoming truly frightened of Nicholson’s presence, even though he was never in real danger.

I think Jack then approached Marty and said, “I don’t know if he necessarily believed me,” DiCaprio told Variety. I don’t know if he felt a real threat.” Marty said, “Let’s do it again tomorrow.” The next day I went to the set and heard that we were redoing the scene for lighting reasons. Everything is fine. But then the props guy comes up to me and says, “I just want you to know that Jack asked for some props. I had to bring him a fire extinguisher, a bottle of whiskey, a lighter and a gun.”

There’s a bar scene where I scare Leo’s character to death with a gun,” Nicholson says of the same. There were no weapons in the script. We shot this scene the night before, but Marty said he had a lighting plan for the next day and wanted to try a few more takes. I wanted to come up with something different, so I asked the prop man to hide a gun on set and also bring a fire extinguisher. The expression on his face when I asked him for a fire extinguisher was priceless.

Beautiful!
