Heat 2 is a project that director Michael Mann is hoping to do following his upcoming film Ferrari, due out this year. The 1995 sequel to his cult film Heat will star Adam Driver, whom Mann had already cast in his biopic as Enzo Ferrari.

“Adam and I talked about this a lot before the strike started, when we were still shooting at the Ferrari.”
Mann told Variety that he was in talks with Driver for the role of Neil McCauley, the criminal Robert De Niro played in Heat. Heat 2 will actually be a prequel to the original film, based on the novel Mann and author Meg Gardiner published last year.
The novel, titled Heat 2, traces the formative years of Detective Vincent Hannah (Al Pacino’s character) and elite criminals Neil McCauley, Chris Sheeherlis and Nate, played in Heat by Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer and Jon Voight. The story told in the novel “leads to the events of the film and then beyond,” the description for Heat 2 reads.
The film will be based on the novel by Mann and Meg Gardiner, which explores the origins and fates of the characters in The Hit.
While nothing has been officially revealed at this point, Pacino has previously expressed a desire to see Dune star Timothée Chalamet play a young version of his Vincent Hannah character, and Elvis actor Austin Butler is rumored to play Val’s Chris Sheeherlis. Mann has revealed more details about what he has in mind for Capture 2 if it comes to fruition.
“In the prequel, I don’t want them to be the same people as in the movie. I want them to be completely different. It is the events that affect them – the conflicts, the tragedies that happen to them – that make them the people they are.”
He went on to say that Heat 2 will mainly focus on Neil McCauley and how his former life shaped the man we met in the first film.
“For Neil, it’s the events of the prequel that give him the gospel: ‘There’s nothing in your life that you can’t run from in 30 seconds.’
However, while Heat 2 is a dream project for Mann (and no doubt for many fans of the first film), the director says he won’t feel “incomplete” if it never comes to fruition.
“Don’t get me wrong. I want to do it. But if I don’t, I won’t be inferior.”
Ferrari stars Adam Driver, Penelope Cruz, Shailene Woodley and Gabriel Leone will debut at the 80th Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2023, where they will compete for the Golden Lion. Its release is scheduled for December 25, 2023 in the US.
