Here’s how the artist, who had just experienced the success of Subtract, announced the release of a new album:
“Last fall, I discovered that so many changes were taking place in my life and the lives of my friends. After the summer heat, everything calmed down, stabilized, collapsed, reached a tipping point or exploded. When I went through a difficult period at the beginning of last year, writing songs helped me understand my feelings and come to terms with what was happening. And as I learned about my friends’ different situations, I wrote songs, some from their point of view, some from my own, to convey how they and I saw the world at the time. Between grief, depression, loneliness and confusion, there were ups and downs of falling in love and new friendships. My father and brother told me about a composer named Elgar who wrote “Enigma Variations” where each of the 14 songs was about each of his friends. That is what inspired me to create this album. When I was recording Subtract with Aaron Dessner, we hit it off right away. We wrote and recorded songs non-stop, and from that collaboration, this album was born. I feel like he captured the feeling of autumn perfectly in his sound, and I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I do.”
