There are monuments of popular literature which, over time, also become a real point of reference for the great Hollywood productions. This is the case of “Little Women”, which Rai Movie broadcasts at 21.15 on Friday 7 April in its most recent production. Massachusetts, mid-19th century. The “little women” are the four March sisters: Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy. Against the backdrop of the American Civil War, the girls prepare to face life between small and large, personal and domestic dramas, and small and large personal ambitions. The emotional strength of Louisa May Alcott’s novel has repeatedly convinced Hollywood to transpose the story to the big screen, which has therefore become a cornerstone of popular cinema. Even in this recent version of Greta Gerwig, chosen as screenwriter and then director on the wave of the success of her “Lady Bird”, the work on the cast is at the center of production care. Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh and Eliza Scanlen animate a lively and composed quartet, accompanied by “mama” Laura Dern, in an accurate work that gracefully modernizes the marked outline of Alcott’s novel. Greta Gerwig’s work is very concentrated on the need to propose the topicality and contemporaneity of the personal and family problems of Jo and her sisters. Critics and the public have agreed with the writing and production choices: many Oscar nominations, and a statuette for best costumes to Jacqueline Durran.
