U.S. tennis rising star Coco Goff became the first U.S. teenager to reach the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open two years in a row, an achievement not seen in more than two decades since Serena Williams.
The 19-year-old tennis player defeated Caroline Wozniacki in the fourth round of the tournament. Despite inclement weather conditions, with temperatures as high as 32 degrees Celsius, Gauff persevered in the third set, correcting his mistake and sealing victory.
Goff has won his last six fights, beating Wozniacki, a 33-year-old mother of two who just retired, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.
Jenela Ostapenko prepares for Coco Gauff
Her next opponent will be No. 20 seed and 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, according to the Associated Press.
23-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic outlasted previous stager Borna Godjo 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 on Sunday night, Ostapenko 3 -6, 6-3, 6-1 over defending champion Iga Swatek.
Quarterfinals: Djokovic vs Fritz, Muchova vs Cirstea
In the other women’s quarter-final, Karolina Muchova will face Solana Sistia.
For the men, there will be at least one American man in the semifinals, with Francis Tiafoe and Ben Shelton advancing to the quarterfinals.
Djokovic will face American Taylor Fritz, number 9, on Tuesday. It will be Djokovic’s 13th quarter-final match at Flushing Meadows and Fritz’s first.
Gauff in good form after Wimbledon
Gauff, who reached the final of the 2022 French Open but lost to Swatek, has made an impressive comeback.
Following a first-round knockout at Wimbledon in July, he has won 15 of his last 16 tournaments, including two Grand Slam titles at the Washington Open and Cincinnati.
This streak, along with his experience late in the big tournaments, is a testament to his growing tennis prowess.
