It is certainly not the first time that Joaquin Phoenix has pushed himself to the limit for a role, just look at the slimming and body work done to Joker by Todd Phillips. The 48-year-old Oscar winner passed out on the set of his new film Beau is scared by Ari Aster (that of Midsummar And hereditary, so to speak). Here Phoenix co-stars with Broadway diva Patti LuPone, who is somehow involved in what happened.

The director himself said it, after a surprise screening for the fans followed by a Q&A moderated by Emma Stone, writes Deadlines.

“There was a very intense scene for Patti: the camera was on her, not on Joaquin. And he suddenly walked out of frame,” said Ari Aster. “I was very pissed because he was really handsome take. But it all seemed strange to me, so I turned the corner and found Joaquin on the ground,” recalled the director.

“I knew it was bad because Phoenix let people touch him, take care of him, let them. The point is, he passed out in the take someone else’s: he wasn’t there in front of the camera, he was acting for Patti and remained there for her until he collapsed. It’s very poetic that he passed out in another actor’s shot,” Aster pointed out.

Beau is scared (in Italian cinemas from April 27) is a psychedelic and adrenaline-pumping journey, the odyssey of a man who goes through various seasons of his existence, between daily challenges and unpredictable scenarios, and must face his darkest fears to return to a place call home.
