A hospital pediatrician has been recognized by the 19th Latin American Congress of Pediatric Infectious Diseases for managing to identify key differences between post-COVID-19 syndrome and dengue fever.

The work performed by doctors and teachers in the Pediatric Emergency Department of the Academy of Medical Sciences Hospital stood out as one of the best scientific research works among the 500 works presented at the conference. It addresses the clinical distinction between multisystem inflammatory syndrome and dengue shock in children post-COVID-19, which is critical for diagnosis and adequate treatment.

The team of doctors and teachers who conducted the study, led by Dr. Ricardo Iramain, director of the hospital’s pediatric emergency department, explained that they registered cases infected with covid-19 and dengue fever. Patients from teaching hospitals during the novel coronavirus pandemic.

He revealed that similarities between dengue and the shock produced in some cases by multisystem inflammatory syndrome caught the attention of experts at the start of the health crisis.

“The challenge we have is how to differentiate between them so as not to confuse them because each disease has different treatment implications; that is, it has different ways of managing it, and if we don’t realize what this or that disease is, We could be doing a lot of harm to patients,” he noted.

The study was submitted to Congress as “Clinical Laboratory Differentiation between Pediatric Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome (SIMS-TS) and Dengue Patients.” In addition to Ilaman, doctors Christian Escobar, Alfredo Jara, Jorge Ortiz and María José Guillén were also involved in the preparations.

The conclusions were presented at the 19th Congress of the Latin American Society for Pediatric Infection (SLIPE 2021), held in Buenos Aires from October 13 to 15, 2021. Recently, the list of winners was announced and the winner was awarded in the category “8 Best Jobs of SLIPE 2021” by a doctor from the hospital la FCM.

Dr. Iramain highlighted that a few years ago, they presented their work on the clinical features and clinical profile of dengue behavior at the Congress of the Latin American Pediatric Association (ALAPE) and received an honorable mention.

The famous pediatrician mentioned that the Latin American Society of Pediatric Infectology is a prestigious scientific society that has formed a very strict jury to select the best works with a high degree of scientific and academic rigor. That’s why the award should be a point of pride, “not just for the pediatric emergency department, but for the entire hospital,” he said.

“It should inspire us, because it has been proven that we must and can do good scientific work. We have scientific capabilities and scientific creativity that allow us to achieve good results in this sense.” Ilaman emphasized.

Professor Dr. Osmar Cuenca Torres, Dean of the Academy of Medical Sciences, recalled that when he took office in 2021, he said that he would focus a lot of energy on research.
