Swedish Steel Prize 2023: here are the finalists

Four nominees have been officially shortlisted for the Swedish Steel Prize 2023, which honors engineering, cooperation and steel innovations that lead to a better and more sustainable world.

Indeed, the Swedish Steel Prize inspires engineers, designers and inventors to further explore the infinite potential of steel: it is no coincidence that the candidate applications are innovative examples of cutting-edge technology, created thanks to the possibilities offered by the range of steel products premium from SSAB.

This year we are happy to have candidates who point the way towards a more sustainable future. In fact, two candidates in the field of mechanical batteries presented such innovative uses of steel that it was not possible to choose between the two. So we named them both“, he claims Eva PeturssonChair of the Swedish Steel Prize Jury and Head of Research and Innovation at SSAB.

Steel Prize 2023: finalists and jury motivations

DigJim, Norway – ultra-fast maintenance system

This user-driven innovation is a patented system designed for quick on-site replacement of bucket guard parts. This solution paves the way for new flexible and sustainable ways of working in maintenance. Additionally, taking advantage of the strength and wear resistance of the material, the long tooth design of the DigJim system has documented increased productivity in use.

Gestamp, Spain – front lower control arm

In an application with demanding requirements Gestamp pushes the material properties regarding strength and formability. This essential part of the chassis is essential for both routine operations and safety. Using advanced forming technology, the front suspension lower control arm has an optimized single shell design, made possible by the introduction of a new level of material strength.

The winner will be announced at a ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden on May 11

Green Buffers, Sweden – next generation train coupling technology

Swedish Steel Prize 2023To increase train safety, Green Buffers introduces high strength steel for energy absorption between rail cars. This next generation coupling technology paves the way for more sophisticated custom design solutions and offers a greater number of high and well-defined force levels for energy absorption. With the potential to retrofit existing trains, improving rail transport safety has the potential to be implemented quickly.

Levistor, UK and ZOOZ, Israel – mechanical battery for fast charging

These high power mechanical batteries, thanks to the new steel flywheel design, are green solutions for a more sustainable world. Mechanical batteries offer longer life, no degradation and less pollution than chemical batteries. With this improved steel solution, safer operation is also achieved by replacing traditional flywheels with layers of high-strength steel that isolate defects and limit damage.
