MTV Video Music Awards 2023 Celebrates 50 Years of Hip-Hop with Nicki Minaj

NEW YORK – The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) return to the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on the night of September 12-13. The spotlight is on hip-hop, which turns 50 in 2023, starting with this episode’s host, famed rapper Nicki Minaj. Performances will include such historical names of the genre as DMC, Doug E. Fresh, Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, LL Cool J, Lil Wayne.

Guests represent the new musical generation in the form of Doja Cat and the old guard in the person of Sean “Diddy” Combs. Taylor Swift won the nominations this time around with 8, followed by SZA with 6, Miley Cyrus, Doja Cat, Nicki Minaj, Kim Petras, Olivia Rodrigo and Sam Smith with five, and BlackPink, Diddy and Shakira with four. Maneskin are nominated in the Best Rock category for their video for “The Loneliest” and will be one of the first to play.
