The synopsis for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has finally arrived, showing what’s to come in the latest DCEU film. While 2023 hasn’t been a strong year for the DCEU, the franchise still has one final film to release before James Gunn and Peter Safran’s universe comes to life with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom releasing in December. After numerous delays and numerous reshoots, Warner Bros. Discovery is preparing to release Jason Momoa’s new film about the iconic Justice League hero.

As Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom bids farewell to the DCEU, the film’s marketing campaign has finally begun, with a new trailer arriving later this week. Following the release of the teaser over the weekend, Warner Bros. Pictures has released the first official synopsis for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Just in time, the synopsis for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom hints at Black Manta’s rise to power and the surprising alliance that Arthur Curry is forced to join:

“Having failed to defeat Aquaman the first time, Black Manta is more determined than ever to avenge his father’s death and will do anything to defeat Aquaman once and for all. This time, Black Manta is more formidable than ever, wielding the power of the mythical Black Trident to unleash an ancient and malevolent power. To defeat him, Aquaman will go to his brother Orm, the former king of Atlantis, to form an unlikely alliance. Together, they must put aside their differences to protect their kingdom and save Aquaman’s family and the world from irreversible destruction.”

“All original cast members will return to reprise their roles: Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry/Aquaman, who will have to juggle his duties as the king of Atlantis and a new father; Patrick Wilson will play Orm, Aquaman’s half-brother and nemesis, who will now have to take on a new role as his brother’s reluctant ally; Amber Heard will play Mera, Queen of Atlantis and mother of the heir to the throne; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will become Black Manta, determined more than ever to avenge his father’s death by destroying Aquaman, his family and Atlantis; and Nicole Kidman will play Atlanna, a fierce leader and mother with the heart of a warrior. They will also be played by Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus and Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Sheen.”

What we know about Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was highly anticipated as a team-up film starring Arthur and Orm after the events of the first film. We still don’t know if their alliance will last throughout Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, as Ocean Master may try to put a spoke in his brother’s wheels. Although Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom revealed Mera’s pregnancy, it is reported that Amber Heard will only have a few scenes in the film.

One of the biggest mysteries surrounding the plot of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is the secret role of Pilou Asbæk, which has yet to be revealed. Another new cast member making their DCEU debut in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is Indya Moore as Karshon, the villainous Green Lantern in the comics. As for other DCEU characters, Ben Affleck as Batman originally filmed new scenes for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, but his material was cut entirely due to the birth of the new DC Universe.

With just a few days left until the full trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is released, only time will tell if the visuals can be the final push for the DCEU. Even if Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom doesn’t make any effort to close the DCEU, it’s still heartbreaking to know that this is the final chapter of a saga that began a decade ago. Hopefully the massive anticipation for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be worth it when it hits theaters in December.
