The French author condenses his story into just over two hours making it an ensemble film with many prominent names. There are actors of the caliber of Penèlope Cruz, Edgar Ramirez, Gael Garcia Bernal, Ana de Armas, Leonardo Sbaragliaall important names in the Latin film scene.
A non-random choice, as the story takes place in Cuba, recounting the complexity of local politics.
It is a commissioned work that Assayas accepted to find the producers, the cast and the locations of “Carlos”, his 2010 (award-winning and Emmy-nominated) miniseries centered on the life of Venezuelan terrorist Ilich Ramírez Sánchez. This production is also interesting, although for many it does not reach the value of previous works, but it always stages plots that intrigue and surprise.
An ideal film for an evening of auteur crime cinema, with strong notes that make this thriller movie drama on Netflix also a sort of unprecedented South American soap.
“WaspNetwork” is an international espionage thriller, but first of all it is a chronicle reconstruction of what happened to the group of Cuban dissidents in the 1990s.
It is perhaps a not too well known film by Assayas, but not for this reason little worthy of being known and watched.
Fluid in its writing and dynamic in its narrative rhythm, the film best combines political intrigue with the private life of the characters.
The viewer finds himself increasingly involved in an intricate network of contacts and powers that work in the shadows, building a thematic and emotional bridge with the individual characters, immersed in a geared game that is bigger than them. From which they will hardly be able to escape.
A film that convinces of its genre, among the titles of the library of dramatic thrillers on Netflix, to watch at any time.

We are in 1990. The United States has cut off its relations with Cuba and many dissidents decide to flee Castro’s regime by flying to Miami, the land of possibilities. In that circumstance, a new spy network is formed, the so-called Wasp Network, whose main objective is to track down conspiracies against Fidel Castro and his government.
These infiltrators manage to operate in the shadows and have never stopped believing in the promised “revolution”, building themselves double and even triple identities to fearlessly defend their country. And they do so despite the great risks and enormous inconveniences that their actions bring with them.
The private affairs, loves, family ties and sacrifices of these men, committed for years to keeping the secret even with the people closest to them, become the center of the film and make the narration something between a spy story and a Apple tree.
