September 2, 2023, Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare Netherlands Notified to the World Health Organization (WHO) human case Laboratory confirmed infection variant (v) Influenza A H1N1 virus Pork is native to the Netherlands. Province of Noord Brabant, Netherlands.
This is the first human infection caused by influenza A H1N1v virus reported in the Netherlands in 2023. Based on available information, there is currently no clear indication of the source of infection and no direct contact with pigs has been reported. As of September 7, there were no symptomatic contacts of this case, and no further test reports were found during daily monitoring. Five close contacts were tracked for a maximum incubation period of 10 days, and no one developed symptoms. Therefore, there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission and the case is considered a single case. Human sporadic cases of influenza A (H1N1).
The potential for human-to-human community transmission and/or international spread of the disease through humans is considered low. Previously, sporadic cases of human infection with influenza A (H1N1) have been reported in various parts of the world, including the Netherlands. According to the International Health Regulations (IHR, 2005), human infection caused by a new influenza A virus subtype is an event with potentially significant public health impact and must be reported to the World Health Organization.
