Older and vulnerable people in Northern Ireland who are at higher risk from COVID-19 will receive booster doses of COVID-19 and flu vaccines from Monday. The decision to accelerate ramp-up plans for the fall comes in response to concerns about new variants of COVID-19. The goal of accelerating vaccine distribution is to provide additional protection to those most vulnerable to infection and reduce the burden on the health care system.
The Northern Ireland Public Health Agency (PHA) said this was a precautionary measure. Rachel Spiers, PHA Immunization and Vaccination Program Manager, emphasized that COVID-19 and influenza remain significant threats. He emphasized that vaccination is the safest and most effective way to protect yourself and those around you, including family members.
People eligible for the COVID-19 and flu vaccination program will be contacted by their GP or may choose to attend a community pharmacy. This includes all adults aged 65 and over, clinically at-risk groups, care home residents, frontline health and social care workers, carers and people living with immunocompromised people.
In addition, the flu vaccine will be provided to all preschool children over the age of two, all primary and secondary school students under the age of 12, and pregnant women.
Vulnerable and high-risk populations must be prioritized for vaccination to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and influenza. By taking proactive steps to boost doses, Northern Ireland aims to protect its population and prevent the healthcare system from being overwhelmed.
