The purpose of the Maricopa County Health Department’s events year after year is to bring together a wealth of resources for free for people.
This year 2023 is no exception, so this September 23rd and October 9th, it will host Expo 2023 Prep and Bienestar events aimed at providing medical screenings, mammograms, vaccines to vulnerable communities in Maricopa County , Pediatric Dental Care and Education Symposium.
“The purpose of this event is to allow people to take advantage of the free resources provided by the Maricopa County Health Department and make them available to everyone,” said Jhoana Molina, spokesperson and vaccine equity manager for the Maricopa County Health Department. Before the pandemic, Molina explained, expos were held as single events and held collectively in shopping malls or community centers.
But due to the strong response from the people, today we doubled down on our efforts and organized three or four events in different communities across the county instead of one. The first event of the year was held on September 9 at the YMCA in Goodyear, Arizona, and drew an overwhelming response.
The next event will be held on Saturday, September 23rd at El Buen Pastor Church (950 W 8th Ave, Mesa) and another on October 9th at San Vicente de Paul School/Church (3130 N 51st Ave) A grand event culminates in Phoenix), located in the heart of Maryville.
Molina commented: “It takes more work because you’re organizing the same event in different parts of the Valley, on different dates. But at the same time, more people benefit because we’re putting resources closer to their communities .”
Although all resources are free, mammograms are the only tests that require an appointment. Women wishing to reserve a seat for either event can call 1-888-233-6121.
“For example, if you want to make an appointment for a Mesa event, call the phone and say I want to make an appointment for a mammogram on September 23rd at El Buen Pastor Christian Church,” Molina explained.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), mammograms are the best test doctors have for finding breast cancer in its early stages.

Molina explained that training on how to handle emergencies will be provided in English and Spanish.
One class will explain how people use the drug naloxone, a nasal spray used to counteract overdoses from powerful drugs like fentanyl. Those who attend this workshop will receive medication to take home.
We will also be giving away first aid kits, children’s safety helmets, Phoenix football game family packages, free family passes to the YMCA and more to attendees.
