The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) earlier this month approved a new COVID-19 vaccine for everyone 6 months and older. The severity of the COVID-19 pandemic has receded, but thousands of people are still hospitalized and hundreds of people die every week in the United States.

Experts worry that many people’s immunity to vaccines and past infections is waning, and that the new vaccine will save many lives. First lady Jill Biden tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this month but experienced only mild symptoms.

The CDC recommends that people who have COVID-19 and are quarantined wait until symptoms have resolved and they meet quarantine guidelines before getting vaccinated. The CDC says children and adults with multisystem inflammatory syndrome should wait until they have recovered from the disease and 90 days after diagnosis before getting vaccinated.
